FAQ
If you don't have enough gold, that's no problem: we can easily add some new gold. If you have too much gold, you can pay (partially) for the work provided with it. During the appointment, we will test and weigh your gold and tell you the specific cost of your idea.
Gemstones with a hardness above 8/10 on the Mohs scale are our favorites (diamond, sapphire, ruby, aquamarine, tourmaline,….).
We only melt solid 18K yellow gold or solid 18K rose gold that has been inspected by our goldsmiths and confirmed to be high-quality gold (carat, purity).. So no silver or white gold, which often contains traces of rhodium and then cracks.
We do not melt down fine chains (because they are usually heavily contaminated) but we are happy to reuse them for a new necklace. Ideal as a base for melting down are plates, rings, medallions and coins. When there is a shortage of gold, we can add a portion in new gold.
Prices for custom-made items and upcycling depend heavily on the custom-made request.
Not all jewelry from our collection is suitable for being made into new gold. We do not recover fine chains or white gold that is often contaminated with rhodium. However, we are more than happy to rework chains into a new necklace.
In that case, you can pay (partially) with old gold. Elisa Lee will deduct the value of the old gold from the cost of designing a new piece of jewelry. This only applies to gold that has been inspected by our goldsmiths and confirmed to be of good quality (carat, purity). This can also be a solution if you have old gold in a gold color that you are not a fan of.
No, that is not possible. You can, however, choose to pay for your design using your own gold. We will then deduct the value of your gold from the cost of the design in new gold of the desired color.
We take twice the weight of the gold required for the creation of a new piece of jewellery. This is because there is always less gold remaining after reworking than there was at the beginning. On the one hand, this is due to material evaporation, and on the other, there is also loss caused by the necessary rolling dies used to roll the gold. Some components, such as clasps and prongs, are not made with old gold because this can reduce the strength of a piece of jewellery.
Since the value of old gold is twice as low as that of new gold, we build this margin in. Creating an upcycled piece of jewellery is an intensive process, and we do not always know what the final result will be. The amount of gold taken in thus eliminates the possibility of significant losses.
We do not do this, because this gold is often too brittle after remelting.
